Dance Video Project - Contemporary with Emma (9.3.–4.5.) open level

Dance Video Project – Contemporary with Emma | Open Level | 8-week project | Mondays 9.3.–4.5. at 17:30–19:30 (2h)

Welcome to an open-level contemporary dance video project! The project is led and choreographed by Emma Julkunen.

During the eight-week project, a dance piece will be created and filmed on the final session of the project on 4.5.

Contemporary dance is a versatile and expressive dance style that combines elements from various genres such as ballet, modern dance, jazz, and lyrical. It is based on strong dance technique, while also breaking away from the strict rules of traditional dance styles and creating space for freer movement and creativity.

In contemporary dance, emphasis is placed on versatile use of the body, dynamic movement pathways, the use of gravity, and the connection between breath and movement. Dancers use a variety of movement qualities and levels, combining flowing and controlled movement with explosive and improvised movement language. Expressing emotions and stories through movement is also an essential part of the style.

The video project is aimed at dancers who have previous experience in contemporary dance or other similar dance styles and who want to develop as dancers and performers.

Please note! Dance video projects have a limited number of spots available, so be sure to sign up early.

Class Description

Contemporary dance is a versatile and expressive dance style that combines elements from various dance genres such as ballet, modern dance, jazz, and lyrical. It is based on strong dance technique, while also breaking away from the strict rules of traditional dance styles and creating space for freer movement and creativity.

In contemporary dance, emphasis is placed on versatile use of the body, dynamic movement pathways, the use of gravity, and the connection between breath and movement. Dancers use a variety of movement qualities and levels, combining flowing, controlled movement with explosive and improvised movement language. Expressing emotions and stories through movement is also an important aspect of the style.

The style is constantly evolving and draws inspiration from different forms of dance as well as the broader field of performing arts. Contemporary dance can be performed both on traditional stages and in more experimental spaces, and it is often used in dance films and contemporary choreography.

Well-known subgenres of contemporary dance include Contemporary Ballet and Contemporary Jazz, which combine the movement language of contemporary dance with their own stylistic characteristics.

Contemporary dance is suitable for dancers of different levels and offers the opportunity to develop body awareness, creative expression, and mobility. It is an art form that gives dancers the freedom to experiment and discover their own movement language without restrictive rules.

Open Level

Open-level classes and courses are open to dancers of different levels. Please note: open level is not the same as beginner level. You can attend open-level classes even if you do not have experience in that specific dance style, as long as you have experience and skills in another style. In open-level classes, the teacher takes dancers of different levels into account, for example by offering different movement options.

Emma Julkunen

Emma is a dancer from Turku with a lifelong background in dance, performing, and competing in various performing arts disciplines. She has several years of experience in dance teaching and choreography at different dance schools.

In her classes, there is a strong focus on finding and developing each dancer’s own personal style, while also giving space to the dancer’s individual creativity. For Emma, it is important that everyone feels free to fully immerse themselves in class and enjoy the sense of freedom that dancing brings.
